Jamaal Charles - RB - Chiefs Jamaal Charles is expected to be the centerpiece of the Chiefs' offense, according to beat writer Kent Babb.
Charles is the best player on the Chiefs' offense, so getting him the ball on the ground and through the air will be a priority. Veteran Thomas Jones was brought in to complement Charles -- not step on his toes. Charles' offseason shoulder surgery does not appear to be a concern with training camp on the horizon. July 18

Charles sat out much of the offseason due to a shoulder scope, but was on the practice field Friday. We'd try to not read into this. Charles was voted the Chiefs' team MVP last season and is clearly the superior option in nearly every aspect. The coaching staff may just be "easing Charles in" after so many missed spring reps. He's certain to lead the backfield in touches.

Jamaal Charles - RB - Chiefs Chiefs coach Todd Haley indicated that he plans to ride the "hot hand" in the backfield this season.
Said Haley, "I think (touch distribution) will depend on a lot of different factors: who's hotter, who's running better, who's blocking and picking up blitzes better, who's doing a lot of things better and who's healthiest." This is good news for Jamaal Charles, because he's superior to Thomas Jones in nearly every aspect. Charles will have the "hot hand" far more often than not. August 4

At least Charles is moving up; Kestahn Moore got first-team reps when Jones was bothered by a minor injury early last week. Still, it's looking increasingly likely that Jones will be the Chiefs' nominal starter to open the season, presumably splitting early-down work with Charles right down the middle. Charles should dominate passing-down snaps, but he's probably not going to flirt with 300 touches if he's not used as an every-down back.

Thomas Jones has "unfailingly" worked with the first-team offense in camp, though Haley says "I wouldn’t hold me to anything on the depth chart right now. We’ll play the guy that gives us the best chance to win on that particular day, that particular series, that particular half, whatever it is." Haley did indicate that Jones would stay with the starters "for the foreseeable future," though there's no question which running back is better: It's Jamaal Charles.

We're keeping the Charles faith in one of the most controversial backfield pictures of training camp. There may be some early-season frustration for Charles owners, but there's no question that he has a considerable talent and effectiveness edge on Jones at this point in their respective careers. The Chiefs won't be able to keep Charles on the sidelines once the games start to count.

Thomas Jones remains atop the depth chart. Haley referred to Charles as "a developing player" who's "had good days, bad days, and in-between days." "They both understand what’s going on," Haley added. "It’s a good situation." This is the strongest indication yet that Haley is listing Charles behind Jones in an effort to create a "competitive situation," and motivate the young back. Haley did the same with Dwayne Bowe in 2009. Bowe started in Week 1.

"What we're pushing Jamaal to do is show that he can do that throughout a 16-game and hopefully-plus schedule. That's something that Thomas has proven through time." Haley has himself to blame for Charles' eight-game window. The head coach had a keg of dynamite sitting next to him on the bench early last season while Larry Johnson was rushing for 2.9 yards per carry.

As opposed to just playing the best player. "There’s a great deal of feel involved in some of these situations," said Haley. The second-year coach's "feel" will probably be based on in-game productivity, and Jamaal Charles is easily the backfield's best bet for per-play production. Charles started the Chiefs' third preseason game. He should confidently be in fantasy lineups.

Jamaal Charles - RB - Chiefs Chiefs coach Todd Haley acknowledged Friday that the team's backfield rotation isn't a great situation for fantasy footballers.
"It's a good problem to have," he said. "Now, in the fantasy football world I could see it being a bad problem to have. But we're worried about the Kansas City Chiefs and what we need to do to win." If Haley would play the best player, everyone would be more successful. Including the Kansas City Chiefs. September 17 - 3:27 p.m. ET

You must be able to adjust in the way that you see fit." Haley may have decided to feature Thomas Jones in Week 2 based on the Browns' weaknesses up the gut. If the logic holds, Jamaal Charles would likely be featured against San Francisco's stout interior. The 49ers' defense figures to be more vulnerable on the perimeter.
